My first students were Glyndebourne choristers, and it gave me an opportunity to pass on what I’d learned on the international opera circuit. The unexpected consequence was that I found a passion for teaching, and became a better singer myself.
When I returned to playing the trumpet, I realised how my expertise as a singer transferred effortlessly to a wind instrument. So now I teach trumpeters as well, and always starting with the breath, as you would for the voice.
I teach in two independent schools in Sussex: Brambletye Prep and Cumnor House School, and also maintain a busy home studio, both for trumpeters and singers. I’ve done Skype and Facetime lessons for students across the pond, and have made some tutorial videos for singers.
